Responsibilities
- Assess, plan and implement individualised, holistic and person-centered nursing care of patients, families or the community
- Coordinate patient care within the multi-disciplinary health team using scientifically based nursing theories and processes
- Serve as a clinical resource in assisting personnel to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and document nursing care in the unit
- Ensure communication and interaction with family and health professionals regarding optimal patient care, acting as a patient advocate when necessary
- Assess, plan and implement advanced nursing care in a specialized field in accordance with standard nursing care procedures and SOPs
- Initiate, direct and maintain emergency treatment (RESUS) as indicated
- Interview patient and family to obtain relevant background information and problem identification
- Do rounds with physicians/medical practitioners to review patient condition and develop nursing care plans
- Prepare day/night shift documentation reflecting patient status, staff ratio and problems
- Communicate with unit manager regarding activities and problems
- Provide input and standards in formulating patient care policy and procedures
- Ensure provision of a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors
- Evaluate, set standards and monitor safe utilization of supplies and equipment
- Actively participate as a team member to achieve organizational goals
- Co-ordinate with Clinical Facilitation Department to meet educational needs of nursing staff and students
- Allocate staff members to promote optimal use of staff and appropriate nursing care
- Maintain involvement in own professional development and keep up to date with evolving policies and procedures
- Foster good interpersonal relations and effective communication within the unit and multi-disciplinary team
- Support implementation of electronic patient records, e-scripts and clinical orders
Requirements
- Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council
- Thorough knowledge of general/specialized nursing theory and practice
- Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and practices
